Introducing Wichita Chiropractor Dr. John Wheeler
Grandma kept giving me medicine, but the pain just wouldn't go away.

It really started when I was a child. I was only 9 years old and it was time for my younger brother and I to spend a week of our summer vacation with Grandma and Grandpa in Oklahoma. It was only the second day of our summer trip when swinging on the tire swing in the back yard; my head struck the oak tree with enough force to cause me to drop to the ground. Grandma came to the rescue and did her best to help, but 3 days later, the headache was constant and the neck pain severe. My parents came early to pick us up and drove us straight to the family Chiropractor. I was adjusted that morning and my headache was instantly relieved and gone before arriving home. I fell in love with Chiropractic over that experience.
My choice to become a chiropractor was made during my high school and early college days. I was working for a medical supply company and traveling across south central Kansas servicing oxygen equipment for ill patients in their home. These were really sick people, most with terminal lung or heart disease. My experience in this job very rewarding and yet, I was so disappointed to see how poor health and disease have such devastating effects. I was challenged to participate in the care of people in a way that can make a difference. I chose to be a chiropractor because the chiropractor is trained in both the promotion of health and the prevention of dis-ease. Best of all, because of the tire swing at Grandma's house, I knew that chiropractic worked!
My family Chiropractor, Dr. B.J. Myers was a real inspiration to me and a mentor in my early days of Chiropractic College. It was his high recommendation that I attend Parker Chiropractic College in Dallas, TX, and so I did.
My life would change forever in my third trimester of Chiropractic College. My Chiropractic Intern discovered a lump in my neck... it was cancer. Hodgkin's Lymphoma to be specific and I would take a year off from school to treat and heal. I learned more about sickness and health that year than any medical school could teach. I learned what it is like to be a patient, both good and bad. I learned what it was like to be sick, I mean really sick. I learned about fear, about the unknown. I learned the difference between a Doctor that cared and a Doctor that didn't. I gained such empathy from that experience. I now know that my cancer experience was part of God's master plan as he prepared me to be a better Doctor for my patients. My remission is now over 15 years.
Our office is unique in a few key ways. We understand that a visit to a Chiropractic office or Acupuncture office can involve a lot of unknowns, so we make everything as easy and comfortable as possible. Our office is a referral practice, which means you won't see our name in the newspaper or in junk mail marketing schemes. You won't find us doing spinal screenings at trade shows or giving out coupons for free massages or X-rays. No, instead we build our practice the old fashion way...we earn it! It's called being referable, and that's what we do here. We pride ourselves on caring more for you, valuing your time and keeping our focus and attention on YOU during each visit. Our patients know that we are quick and easy to get in to see, they know the friends and family they refer to our office will be happy and that we go the extra mile to make it work for every person that comes to our office.
My wife and I are late bloomers in some respects. We were in our thirties when we embarked on the marriage journey in 2005 and our first child was born in August of 2007. Being parents has opened our eyes to a whole new adventurous world. Yes, it's a lot of work, and No, I'm not getting the great sleep I use to, But I wouldn't give up even a second! Our son is what we call our little acupuncture miracle blessing. Thanks to my medical treatment in my early 20's for Hodgkin's, having children was considered unlikely. But together with prayer, hope, acupuncture, chiropractic, (in that order) our family was blessed with an extremely happy healthy boy.

After having one joy filled experience with Vance, we are hoping to expand our family. Since our first pregnancy was achieved more easily than anticipated and had no complications, it was disappointing for us when our second pregnancy ended in miscarriage at around 10 weeks. Through this process we were reminded what a wonderful miracle pregnancy is, and are hopeful to have a successful pregnancy in the future (little Vance could use some competition around the house!). This personal miscarriage experience has even further strengthened my commitment to those couples that come to me seeking assistance in their journey to expand their family, and I continue to find great joy in treating those with infertility and similar difficulties.
If you have ever been told "I told you so", you will know how flustering a comment that can be. I like to lead by example and with that comes the responsibility of practicing what I preach. I recommend for the average person regular, moderate exercise, eat good for you foods in reasonable quantity and limit medications to acute heath crises rather than chronic "forever" problems and lastly, avoid surgery at all cost. It's always easier to stay well than get well, but it's never too late to change your path and start in a healthier direction. I get an adjustment at least every two weeks, but my preference is once a week; this is what helps me feel my best. I also take acupuncture treatment for both wellness and acute care. For example, I choose adjustments and acupuncture for illness rather than antibiotics.
I'm grateful that you have found our web site, Thanks for visiting. I look forward to meeting you in person and learning how we may be of service to you. Give us a call so we can help you take your first step towards better health.
